This former industrial town is made up of four separate areas – Swadlincote, Church Gresley, Midway and Newhall. At the time of the Domesday Book, "Swad" was just a small manor, but the presence of coal and clay in the area led to its urbanisation as colleries, brickworks and potteries came to dominate Swadlincote.
